One day, an expert in time management was speaking to a group of business students and, to drive home a point, used an illustration those students will never forget.
So people… what ARE the big rocks in your life? At the expense of sounding like I'm generalizing, I think a great many people (myself included) fill our jars with gravel first; and perhaps a little sand. I've thought about it a little bit, and I think this is what we're looking at:
- Big rocks = Security; i.e. family, home, work/finances, health
- Gravel = Purpose; i.e. essential interpersonal relationships & goals
- Sand = Freedom & Choice; i.e. non-essential relationships & goals, hobbies, interests, etc.
- Water = The non-essentials; i.e. whatever's left-over.
Now, if I can only manage facing those big rocks, and put them in their place…
